Due to rain this morning, we weren’t able to open any nets until 0800, when we only opened the station garden nets as there were still a few showers coming on the radar. This way we could check them frequently so no birds were caught in the rain. We had an alright catch (20 birds), including 5 Tree Sparrows and a couple of Redwing. The Tree Sparrows have been about at the front of the station for a while now, but they never seem to end up in the nets. I think with the showers they stayed in the garden more, and perhaps because it was darker we managed to catch them. They seem smart enough not to get caught again however! We also caught the second Greenfinch of the season, which was Daniel’s first to ring, so he was pleased.

At 1000 the rain had cleared so we opened up the nets in the lighthouse garden too, which proved worthwhile as we caught good numbers each net round, including a flock of Great Tit and two Brambling. The star bird though was catching a Willow Tit, another first for Daniel. Willow Tits are a rare bird here in Blavand with only ten being caught here before, although all within the past ten years. They are being caught more often as Willow Tits are expanding their range in Denmark. Looking at the Danish Bird Atlas data, you can see their range has been expanding Northwards from the continent. Perhaps we will start catching more of these, and very welcome too as they are a pleasant little bird.

This afternoon we’ve cleaned the station, as we are expecting an influx of guests for week 42.
