Incredible day of bird ringing at Blåvand

mandag 24. juli 2023
af af Strummer Edwards

Today the bird ringing brought us some absolutely incredible birds! We were able to ring multiple new species for the season, including a Wryneck (Vendehals)! The observation team also had some great finds including Manx Shearwater (Almindelig Skråpe) and Caspian Gull (Kaspisk Måge).

Even though we started off the day slow with Dunnock (Jernspurv), Tree Sparrow (Skovspurv), and Icterine Warbler (Gulbug), in the middle of the morning we started catching some insane birds! We caught a pair of Eurasian Bullfinches (Dompap) (both the europea subsp.), our first of the season.

The Wryneck (Vendehals) was without a doubt the highlight of the day.  The famous snake imitation that they do with their neck was so impressive to see in person and it was even doing that while being extracted! The actual intracacies of the feather patterns was incredibly striking and blew all of us away.

The Wryneck (Vendehals) was definitely a shocking find at the lighthouse after it was catching very few birds leading up to it.

After that, we continued to catch a few birds, including three Crested Tit (Topmesje).  Even though they are relatively scarce in most seasons, they have been some of the most frequent captures so far!

These Crested Tit (Topmesje) were all caught in the same net run and we decided it would be nice to show all three at once.
