Insane day of ringing at Blåvand
Even though we've already had quite a few great days of ringing so far, we all knew that the conditions for today would be incredibly promising. For the first time in the season, it would be the perfect low winds, good cloud cover, and no rain.
We started the day off with some good numbers, with multiple Blackbirds (Solsort) being found in each garden. Notably, one had an insane amount of fishing material (and a lure that we cut off in the net) wrapped around one foot. We started working on cutting it off while we extracted it and were able to safely remove the rest once we brought it back to the ringing lab. Thankfully, it seemd like the bird was fine we relased it with not trouble.
You can see the amount of string wrapped around it's foot, and this was even after we had already removed a good deal!
The morning continued to be succesful with us catching a few birds in each garden during every run, including a House Sparrow (Gråspurv) which Henrik has been hoping to catch for a while. During our 8:00 net run thing started to get really busy, with 6 bullfinches (Dompap) being in one net! I was sent back to the station to get a head start on the bullfinches (Dompap) and when they came back a few minutes later, they had 4 more birds! The highlight of that group was definitely a young Stonechat (Vestlig Sortstrubet Bynkefugl), it was insane how thin his legs were!
First time I've had a muscipidae in hand!
The rest of the day was relatively calm but still had good numbers of birds(we only stopped catching a few each run around 2:00 in the afternoon), with the most significant other catch being a trio of Willow Warblers (Løvsanger). If you want to get live updates on how the ringing is going or see more in-hand photos, we've created an instagram account! We'll be posting in-hand videos, highlights, and other great stuff that we're very excited to share with ya'll. There is a link that we posted on our facebook for one of the reels but you can also find us by searching blaavandfuglestation or Blåvand Fuglestation.
