Birding Bliss

torsdag 7. september 2023
af Joseph Stephan

The day started as usual with Morten opening the mist nets, while Louis, David, and I headed to the sea to do our daily morning observation. Just like yesterday, the weather was summery, starting at 17 degrees and increasing to 25 degrees by midday. Unlike yesterday, the wind came from the southeast at 6 m/s, and we had no mist in the morning, so we could start the migration count early on.

As a result, the wader migration was much faster than yesterday, with a total of 16 Oystercatchers (Strandskade), 13 Golden Plovers (Hjejle), four Ringed Plovers (Stor Praestekrave), two Curlews (Storspove), one Bar-tailed Godwit (Lille Kobbersneppe), three Turnstones (Stenvender), 14 Red Knots, 49 Sanderlings (Sandlöber), 26 Dunlins (Almindelig Ryle), 15 Common Snipes (Dobbeltbekkasin), and two Redshanks (Rödben). Furthermore, we saw two Arctic Skuas (Almindelig Kjove) and numerous different ducks migrating southward. Additionally, one Cuckoo (Gøg) and numerous species of raptors appeared, making today one of the best observation days we've had in the last few days. You can find a comprehensive list of all observations here.

With these high numbers of raptors, two Sparrowhawks (Spurvehög) also found their way into the net but unfortunately flew out again before Morten could close the pocket. Morten managed to catch 18 birds today, including the first Wheatear (Stenpikker) and the 75th Pied Flycatcher (Broget Fluesnapper) of this autumn season. Therefore, he was very pleased and satisfied with today's ringing results.

To cap off this wonderful day at the Fuglestation, Morten prepared a delicious lasagna for dinner, which we enjoyed outdoors, accompanied by cold beverages and a beautiful sunset. The weather forecast for tomorrow is looking promising again, so hopefully, the first Pallid Harrier (Steppenhög) will finally make an appearance.
